Is it necessary to join the a National Chess Organization? No. While there are many benefits to being a member of the United States Chess Federation (USCF) your local club can compete and instruct without any ties or obligations to the USCF.
Why should chess players support the United States Chess Federation? This non-profit organization supports chess at all levels of play. It maintains active ratings for all members and allows players to compete within certain defined ability groups, taking into account recent improvements in play at all levels. The USCF helps organizers maintain a high code of ethics and reporting of results. Local, state, and national championships are recognized, and international players are sent to compete in FIDE (the International Chess Federation) as they reach certain playing levels.
What is a rating? How do I get a rating? A rating is a numerical value that attempts to predict results based on your history of chess play. The higher your rating is, the better your chances of success. You can only get a rating by playing against rated players in a rated tournament. To get a higher rating you would have to beat highly rated players, although every win helps raise your rating. Ratings help determine opponents in most tournament, but do not normally effect the final standings.
How much does it cost for a one-year membership? Since the USCF is a non-profit organization, membership allows players to receive a national magazine and have access to discounts on members' items from the USCF store. Yearly dues are currently $15, 17, and 25 for those reaching age specifications: Fees change from time to time. Check latest listings!
